A Magical Day
“Mommy, is it my birthday yet?” He mumbled sleepily, his eyes already shutting.
“Can I have my birthday also?” Asked his sister, equally sleepily.
“Not yet love!! Five more sleeps!” I replied, laughing softly and I leaned down to kiss first his forehead, then hers.

As I walked towards the door, their gentle snores reached my ears. I smiled slightly, turned back and gazed at them as they slept. My children. Mine. There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do for them.

Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny. A typical day for us in the Southern hemisphere. Perfect for a party. There was just so much to do still.
Jumping out of bed, I could already hear them in the kitchen, helping themselves to the cookies I had left out for them to eat so long so they wouldn’t be tempted to sneak a taste of the icing on the cake.
“Mommy! Is this my cake!? It is a Zombie? I love Zombies! Don’t you love Zombies?” he asked his sister. His words all rushing into each other in his excitement.

She just smiled and rolled her pretty little eyes at me, like she was above all that, when in fact, she was dying just as much as he, to taste it.
“Can I give him his presents now?”
“Yes, of course you can. Then, we have to get everything ready because your friends are coming to the party!”
The next half hour passed quickly as presents were exchanged and hugs were freely given and accepted.

“Mommy! It’s a Magic set! How did you know? Can I be Harry Potter?!”
“She’s magic, silly! She knows everything!”
I couldn’t help laughing! From the time they were even younger, I had always told them I had magical powers and would always know where they were and what they were up to. And they still believed it then. So cute! But it was working in my favour so I think it’s ok to let that slide a little longer… we all need a bit of magic in our lives!
The doorbell rang and children started arriving, Oo’ing and Ah’ing at all the decorations and the makeshift Magicians Tent that was set up in the garden. The Magician arrived soon after.

They all sat on cushions around The Mystic Marvel, excitedly waiting for the show to start. Every trick performed brought forth giggles of delight and wonderment from little mouths.

As I served and chatted to parents, making sure things were going smoothly, my ears would automatically pick out their specific laughs and voices, so attuned to them was I. My heart was full.
It was the perfect day. A magical day.
As I sit on the porch and reflect on those times, now, I realise how truly magical they were. And fleeting. They’re all grown up. My ‘magical’ powers not so magical anymore in their eyes. But to me, the magic I hold on to, is of memories made and cherished. Of days like those.

Thanks so much for the link to my cc! Loved him in that Pajama top for this story! It really is a magical time in their lives (and ours) when they are little. Loved that party scene, so effective with the blues!

Oh, this was sooo sweet. ❤️ She’s so right about these moments being fleeting. It seemed like yesterday when mine were little. Now, we’re empty nesters, and time marches on. Magic is what you make of it, and this mother knew exactly how to do that. Lovely story!
