I decided to go with the format of a letter from a daughter to her Mother. We often leave things unsaid, thinking we have all the time in the world, but tomorrow isn’t promised. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you.
Dearest Mom,
Happy Mother’s Day!
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and, having woken up extra early, I sat and reflected a while on what a great Mother you have been to me and how you have influenced the kind of mother I am.
I thought about all the times when as a little girl, you would patiently sit with me and read me my favourite stories. How special they were then, and even more so now. It fostered a love for reading and books in me that has passed down to the twins, your grandchildren, Wade and Ana, today. How happy it makes us to think of you as we read these same perennial stories.
As I got older you would help me with my homework and school projects and impart words of wisdom that made little sense then but became more and more important, and prophetic, as the years flew by.
How glad I was for those nuggets of wisdom when friendships at school fell apart or boyfriends left. I felt like I had the secrets to life, all stored away, ready to use when the time came.
My wedding day was so beautiful as all our planning came together. Walking down the aisle towards Colton, I glanced over to you and Dad, and saw the tears glistening in your eyes. What a happy day that was and I am so grateful that you could both share it with us!
It saddened me that when your grandchildren were born, you were no longer with us. These were dark times for all of us, especially Dad. I miss you Mom… I wish you could see the twins.
How I missed your voice and words of wisdom in those early days as Colton and I fumbled along the road of parenthood ourselves, armed only with hearts full of love for our babies and a desire to protect them. You told me that was all we would need one day, but, until then, I hadn’t really believed it. I should have known better Mom; you were always right!
So, Mom, today as I think of you, I want to say thank you for being my Mom and my best friend. Thank you for making me the woman I am and being there for me when I needed you. I hope I have done you proud.
I will see you shortly! Hope you like the flowers I have for you!
All my love, your daughter, Paige.
Dear Mom,
It’s Colton.
Paige was on her way to visit you yesterday for Mother’s Day. There was an accident…
I know you are finally reunited with your little girl. Tell her we love and miss her very much…

We expected a love letter , not a funeral letter ,sometimes the twist of fate leads us to an early end.

I was finding her letter to her mom bittersweet as it reminded me of what a friend of mine went through and still misses her mom…then I reached the end. *sniff, wipes tears* A beautiful legacy but so terribly sad (and realistic).

Whoa! What a good twist. When I started Colton’s part, I thought he was writing to his own mother then wham! I was so shocked. It’s very sad, but I really enjoyed that surprise. It makes your story stick with me. Great job.

Aww. What a sad ending. 😦 But very sentimental. I especially liked your line about how the mom would “impart words of wisdom that made little sense then but became more and more important.” Nice work. 🙂

Oh gosh! This was so sad from the beginning, but that last bit sent me over. 😦 Such a tragedy for Paige to be gone too. Her twins won’t remember her, and I wonder if her husband could ever be okay after that. 😦
